How to restore WordPress from a Softaculous backup in cPanel

Category: cPanel

If a site update, a new plugin, or a theme change left your site broken, you can roll back to a working version using the backup you created with Softaculous. This guide shows you how to do it from cPanel on your shared hosting, what gets overwritten during the process, and how to confirm the site is back online.

When to use Softaculous restore

Softaculous is the right choice when you created the backup with Softaculous itself and you want to return a specific site installation to an earlier state. If you need to restore individual files, a full cPanel account, or email data, the right tool is the cPanel Backup Wizard instead.

Use Softaculous when:

  • The backup appears under Softaculous > Backups.
  • You want to roll back a single site installation.
  • You need to restore files, the database, or both for that installation.

Avoid it if the issue lives in another account, in email, or in files outside the site folder.

Before you restore: quick checks

The restore process overwrites files and the database of the selected installation, so it pays off to run these checks first:

  1. Write down the exact URL of the site you will restore (for example, yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com/blog).
  2. Confirm that the backup matches that installation and a date before the issue appeared.
  3. Check the available disk space in cPanel so the restore does not stop midway.
  4. If possible, download a copy of the backup file to your computer as a second copy.
  5. Let your team or clients know that the site may be unavailable for a few minutes.

Step 1. Open Softaculous from cPanel

  1. Sign in to your cPanel with your username and password.
  2. Look for the Softaculous Apps Installer icon in the software section.
  3. Click it to open the main Softaculous panel.

If your cPanel arranges icons in category groups, it may also appear as Softaculous inside the applications group.

Step 2. Open the backups list

  1. Inside Softaculous, click the Backups icon in the top bar.
  2. You will see the list of available backups with the installation name, the domain, and the creation date.
  3. Identify the correct backup by matching the domain and date with the information you noted earlier.

If you cannot find the backup, also check the Installations section and open the actions menu for your installation; some Softaculous versions show the Restore button there.

Step 3. Start the restore

  1. In the row of the correct backup, click the Restore icon (it usually looks like a curved arrow).
  2. A screen with the restore options will appear.
  3. Select what you need to recover:
    • Restore Files / Restore Directory: returns the site files to the backup state.
    • Restore Database: returns the database to the same point.
  4. If you are not sure, select both options so the installation stays consistent.
  5. Confirm by clicking Restore Backup or Restore Installation.

After you confirm, Softaculous shows a progress bar. Do not close the tab or reload the page until you see the success message in Softaculous.

Step 4. Verify the site works

Once Softaculous reports that the restore is done:

  1. Open your site in a private window to bypass the local cache.
  2. Review the homepage and at least two inner pages.
  3. Go to yourdomain.com/wp-admin and confirm you can log in.
  4. Check active plugins, the current theme, and the basic options under Settings > General.
  5. If you run a store or a form, try a test order or a test submission.

Final verification checklist

  • The selected backup matches the correct installation.
  • The restore finished with no error messages in Softaculous.
  • The site frontend loads without a white screen or 500 error.
  • You can access the site dashboard and Settings.
  • Plugins and the theme are active as expected.
  • Recent content matches the backup date.

Common issues and fixes

  • The backup is missing from the list: check whether you downloaded it to your computer and removed it from the server. If so, upload it again or use the cPanel Backup Wizard.
  • Softaculous reports a disk space error: free up space in your account before retrying; review heavy files and old backups.
  • The site still shows a 500 error after restoring: temporarily disable plugins from File Manager by renaming the wp-content/plugins folder.
  • The site shows a white screen: review the white screen guide to rule out theme conflicts or PHP memory issues.
  • The domain loads an old version: clear your browser cache and, if you use a caching plugin, clear its storage too.
  • Recent content changed: remember that the backup returns the site to the exact moment it was created; posts or orders created after that point will not be there.
